Prince of darkness
John Carpenter has made some amazing horror movies, but Prince of Darkness (1987) is my favorite. Donald Pleasance plays a priest who discovers a large vat of green fluid in the basement of an old church near downtown Los Angeles. He comes to discover that the liquid is the very essence of Satan himself, and that a secret sect knows as "The Brotherhood of Sleep" has kept it hidden all these years. But now the apocalypse is brewing and the vat of liquid Satan begins to boil over!
This film is slow-brewing yet is intensely unnerving. The mood of the film, the creepy street people and the church itself all make for an unsettling watch. Throw in the eerie occurrences caused by the Anti-God's growing power and you have a movie that will leave you with permanent chills. My favorite part is the use of the dream sequences that are shared by the group in the church all caused by tachyons. The dream are explained through the movie so I will not spoil anything here, but I will say that its what nightmares are made of!
This is by far the best cast I have seen in a Carpenter film since The Thing. Everyone had great chemistry and worked well with each other. No one over shadows anyone and everyone is likable. The one thing that i abloustly love about this film is the score. Everyone knows that his films have great scores, Halloween, The Thing and so on. But this score has a dread-inducing effect that does not let up till the credits. That just shows you the skill Carpenter has as a composer.
I feel that this film in one of Carpenter's underrated classics. It is the second part in his "Apocalypse Trilogy" started with The Thing and ending with In The Mouth of Madness (another of my favorite films).
I highly recomend this to everyone who enjoys a smart and amazing horror film. Maybe watch it with The Thing and In the Mouth of Madness to experience the dread and hopelessness these films infer.
This is currently available to buy on Amazon but I recommend purchasing the blue ray from Shout! Factory as their releases are amazing!
