Phantom of the Paradise

Phantom of the Paradise (1974)

I know that this is not really a "horror" movie, but its close. Released on Halloween night in 1974, Phantom of the Paradise is a musical rock opera. Directed by Brian De Palma, Phantom stars Paul Williams, William Finely, and Jessica Harper.  They synopsis is as follows, A disfigured composer sells his soul for the women he loves so that she will perform his music. however, and evil record tycoon betrays him and steals his music to open his rock palace, the Paradise.  I have never heard of this film, until one day I saw the blu ray release date from Shout! Factory. I try to see the movies that they release on blu ray because I feel that they know the hidden gems in the history of film.
Release just one year before "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" this film probably did not get the attention and appreciation it deserved as is bombed at the theater.  This movie is a visually and musically impressive rock opera with a healthy dose of horror and tongue-in-cheek humor. The films plot is a neat reworking of both "Faust" and "The Phantom of the Opera", but De Palma puts his own spin on things. Swan (played by Paul Williams) specializes in taking beautiful things and destroying them, corrupting art with his grotesquely commercial hands. Indeed, Swan  immediate reaction upon hearing Leach's (William Finely) wonderful lyrics is to taint them by giving them to a talent-less singer.
Jessica Harper brings a great performance and voice. The beauty to Leach's beast, she becomes the obsession of Leach, only to be corrupted by Swan.  I could probably write a whole lot more and give you more plot but I will just leave you with this. You must see this movie. If you are a fan of "Rocky Horror" then you will love this. The music aside, the acting is great and the story is excellent. But if that still doesn't convince you then watch it for the music. The music is fantastic. With Paul Williams writing and performing most of the songs how can you go wrong.

I highly recommend this film. Must watch!

8.5/10
